A timeless, handcrafted, one of a kind portrait capturing a unique legacy with Silver and Light
Legacy portraits
Our Legacy Portraits are created using a historic process dating back to the 1851 invented by Frederick Scott Archer. Commonly known as wet plate collodion photography that involves coating a piece of metal (these became known as tintypes or ferrotypes) with a collodion emulsion, sensitizing it in silver nitrate and then creating and developing a physical image before an archival varnish is applied for lifetime protection.
It is a return to photography as a craft. The result is more than a photograph. It’s a physical piece of history.
Unlike modern photography, no two plates are ever the same. Each plate carries its own character, the subtle imperfections, textures, and tones that make it truly one of a kind. There lies the charm in each photograph as each handcrafted piece are never perfect the way digital is, it is photography is its truest sense.

About the Process
Every Legacy Portrait plate is poured, exposed, and developed by hand on-site using a handcrafted historic photographic process that embraces authenticity and character.
You'll have the unique opportunity to watch your portrait emerge in real time as part of this historic photographic process. Once completed, your plate is varnished and prepared for long term preservation. Plates can be taken home after the session. High resolution digital scans are included with every session.
Natural imperfections such as chemical markings, soft focus, edge artifacts, or tiny particles are all unique qualities they are not flaws, but part of what gives each portrait its depth, character, and authenticity.
Each plate takes about 20-30 minutes from start to finish. That includes preparing the chemistry, capturing your portrait, developing it in the darkroom, and varnishing it for long term preservation.
If anything technical interferes with your portrait such as blinking, or a rare chemical irregularity, the plate will be remade at no additional cost.
Additional Plates
Additional plates may be created and purchased during your session, offering the opportunity to preserve multiple moments. Each additional plate requires time to craft, and will extend your session accordingly.
Additional 4×5 plates: $75
Additional 5×7 plates: $125
Additional 8×10 plates: $200
